Housing Counseling and Education
-
HUD Sponsored Housing Counselors. Want advice on buying a home, renting, default, foreclosure, credit issues or reverse mortgages? HUD sponsors certain housing counseling agencies throughout the country who in turn give advice free or at low cost.
- BALANCE Housing Education Program. If you dream of owning your own home someday, it’s never too early to start planning. Conversely, if you have missed or expect to risk mortgage payments, the best way to avoid foreclosure (besides making all your payments) is to address the issue as soon as it occurs and to keep the lender informed at all times. BALANCE counselors can provide assistance in either case.
Credit Improvement and Restoration
- National Foundation for Credit Counseling. NFCC member agencies provide comprehensive credit and money management services based on individual needs. Such services are provided free or at affordable cost, and are offered in-person, by phone or, in some cases, online. Housing counseling is also provided by many members for consumers who want to purchase homes and those who have fallen behind on their mortgage payments.
- Consolidated Credit Counseling Services. Consolidated Credit's mission is to help families end financial crisis and solve money management problems. By utilizing educational programs, professional counseling and money management instructions, Consolidated Credit establishes a customized program that fits your needs and enables you to achieve your goal – freedom from debt.
Money Management and Financial Planning
- Money Management International. MMI offers help with budgeting, money management and credit issues. Their counselors take the time to thoroughly understand your situation and work with you to create a livable spending plan and a roadmap for becoming debt free and achieving your financial goals. You can choose to work directly with a counselor in person (within select markets), by telephone or online.
- Consumer Financial Education Foundation of America. CFEFA was created to provide individuals with practical money-management skills and an introduction to financial planning through course work that covers the fundamentals of money management. CFEFA believes that financial education is the springboard towards financial independence and offers its credit counseling and financial management courses free of charge, without regard to the client's ability to pay.
